Cyclone Michaung live updates: Most of Chennai remains submerged due to heavy rain under the impact of ‘Michaung’, which has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm. The storm, currently over Bay of Bengal, is likely to head towards the Andhra Pradesh coast. Heavy inundation has been reported from low-lying areas in Chennai while the runway at the airport has been closed till 11 pm. The cyclone is expected to make landfall between Nellore and Machilipatnam Tuesday noon.

Stay Indoors, Work From Home: Tamil Nadu’s Cyclone Michaung Advisory

In view of the fast-approaching Cyclone Michaung, the Tamil Nadu government has issued an advisory asking people to stay indoors and work from home. They have also been advised to keep their doors and windows shut, waterproof key documents and expensive items, and avoid taking shelter under trees. Residents have been urged to gather critical supplies such as non-perishable food items, water, and necessary medications.

Cyclone Michaung Live: Michaung Intensifies Into Severe Cyclonic Storm

Cyclonic storm Michaung has intensified to severe cyclonic storm at around 8:30 am on Monday, about 90 km from Chennai and 200 km from Puducherry, says India Meteorological Department. It is likely to intensify and cross South Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Machilipatnam during Tuesday forenoon with a maximum wind speed of 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph.

Sixteen trees uprooted in Chennai under the impact of Cyclone Michaung have been removed, said a police bulletin on Monday. As many as 17 subways have been closed due to waterlogging. A green corridor is being maintained from the airport to Anna Salai. No deaths or drowning/electrocution incidents have been reported thus far. The city has received 15 cm rainfall between 8:30 pm and 4:30 am and major roads where waterlogging was reported are being cleared.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has cautioned countrymen amid the approaching ‘Cyclone Michaung’, saying that he was in constant touch with the governments of states on the eastern coast to coordinate relief and rescue efforts. Speaking at a victory rally at the BJP headquarters in the national capital on Sunday, he also urged BJP workers in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh to join the relief and rescue efforts and support the local administration.
