Chhattisgarh in the category of ‘Achiever’ this time with 55.2 points
Raipur 23 February 2025: According to the report released by NITI Aayog, Chhattisgarh has made a big leap in the health index. Chhattisgarh has come second among the top states of better health index. In the study report released by NITI Aayog on fiscal health assessment, Chhattisgarh ranked second in the country in the ranking of 2022-23. Chhattisgarh scored 55.2 points in the ranking released on the basis of five different indices. This initiative has been taken by NITI Aayog to develop an understanding about the fiscal health of states in India. It is noteworthy that Chhattisgarh ranked second in the country for the third consecutive year. 18 major states of the country were included in the ranking of NITI Aayog. These states drive the Indian economy in terms of their contribution to India’s GDP, Chhattisgarh’s consistent performance in raising revenue from minerals, demographics, total public expenditure, revenue and overall fiscal stability. As states account for nearly two-thirds of public expenditure and one-third of total revenue, their fiscal performance is considered crucial for the country’s overall economic stability. Data from the Comptroller and Auditor General was used for the ranking. The five sub-indices on the basis of which the report was prepared include quality of expenditure, revenue mobilization, fiscal prudence, debt index and debt sustainability. In addition, a comprehensive state-wise analysis report was prepared to bring out state-specific fiscal health issues across the five key sub-indices.
High performance of 5 states The top five high performing states in the ranking are Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Jharkhand and Gujarat. While the aspirational five states are Haryana, Kerala, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and Punjab. However, the performance of states varies across the five sub-categories. For instance, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar have good scores under quality of expenditure, but they rank low in terms of revenue mobilization. Chhattisgarh left behind many big states In the ranking, Chhattisgarh has left behind many big states like Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh. In the ranking of 2022-23, Chhattisgarh got 55.2 marks. In this, it got 55.1 in the expenditure quality index, 56.5 in revenue mobilization, 56.0 in fiscal prudence, 79.6 in debt index and 29.0 in debt sustainability. Chhattisgarh remained in the achiever category in the quality of expenditure, while it remained in the front runner category in revenue mobilization. Chhattisgarh has remained at number two continuously from 2020-21 to 2022-23.
